This is when you will experience the best results.

Let's dive in!

8 Tips to Help You Maintain Healthy, Youthful Skin

1. Cleanse Your Skin Properly

This is the first step to achieving healthy, youthful skin. Using a gentle cleanser that is suitable for your skin type is crucial. It will help remove dirt, oil, and makeup without stripping your skin of its natural oils.

Here’s steps to help:

  • Develop a consistent cleansing routine, cleansing your skin both in the morning and at night.

  • Choose a gentle cleanser that is appropriate for your skin type (this is crucial). Request a virtual consultation with me here if you need help choosing a cleanser suitable for your skin.

  • Use lukewarm water, rather than hot water, when cleansing your skin. Hot water can dry out your skin. Finish washing with cold water to boost circulation.

2. Moisturize Your Entire Body (not just your face)

This is essential. Most people think of healthy youthful skin on their faces, but often forget about their neck, chest, and full body!

Here’s steps to help:

  • Incorporate a moisturizer into your daily routine, apply it after showering or bathing while skin is still damp (key: while skin is still damp).

  • When you are moisturizing solely your face, be sure you include your neck and chest always.

3. Wear Sunscreen Daily

Wearing sunscreen is a must, especially when spending time outdoors. It helps to protect the skin from harmful UV rays that can cause damage and prematurely age the skin. Again, think about all parts of your skin exposed (not just your face).

Here’s steps to help:

  • Wear sunscreen with at least SPF 30 every day, even on cloudy days.

  • Apply sunscreen at least 15 minutes before going outside. If you get your skin wet from swimming or sweating, be sure to reapply every 2 hours at a minimum.

4. Practice Consistent Exercise

Consistent exercise and movement of your body is incredibly important for your overall health, including the health of your skin. It helps to improve circulation, which in turn helps to bring oxygen and nutrients to the skin.

Here’s steps to help:

  • Choose an exercise you actually enjoy so you are more likely to stick to it consistently. Whether it’s running, swimming, pilates, yoga, or cycling. Whatever makes you feel the best!

  • Make a schedule for your daily exercise routine. You can’t “wing it” when it comes to an exercise routine. Make this a priority into your day because you deserve to be the healthiest most youthful version of yourself!

  • Incorporate a mix of cardio and strength training for overall health and skin health. Strength training is critical for building muscle mass which helps increase your metabolism, aiding in weight loss and a toned body. Regular strength training can also help to prevent bone loss, which is particularly important for women as they age.

5. Get At Least 7-8 Hours of Sleep Each Night

Getting quality sleep (for at least 7-8 hours) each night is crucial for maintaining healthy, youthful skin. When you’re sleeping, this is when your body is able to repair and regenerate your skin.

Here’s steps to help:

  • Create a bedtime routine, establish a consistent schedule for going to bed and waking up. As closely as you can, go to bed and wake up at the same time every day (even on weekends).

  • Avoid electronic screens, caffeine, and eating too close to your bedtime. Consider using a white noise machine to create a relaxing environment for sleep.

  • Use a comfortable mattress, pillow, and sheets. Not everyone thinks about how their bed directly correlates to their health, but anyway you can set yourself up for restful sleep will be a benefit to your health. Don’t underestimate what a quality sheet material or pillow will do for your sleep ;)

6. Managing Stress

Managing your stress levels is not only important for your overall health, it’s also important for the health of your skin. Stress can cause inflammation and lead to a variety of skin issues. When you’re stressed, your body produces more cortisol (stress hormone), and when your body starts producing excess cortisol, it loses its ability to retain water. This can lead to dehydrated and flaky skin.

Here’s steps to help:

  • Find a stress-relieving activity that you enjoy, such as meditation, yoga, or journaling. Get into a daily practice and routine and treat it like you would the most important appointment of your life (because it is).

  • Make time for self-care each day, whether that means you’re taking time to read a book, go for a walk, take a bath, or spend time with friends and family.

  • Try to avoid unnecessary stressors, such as toxic relationships or overloading on work. Also limit your time on screens as much as possible. Most overstimulation comes from visual overstimulation. Our phones or computers in our faces everyday don’t help with this. Pause, breath, and close your eyes multiple times a day to give your eyes and mind a needed rest.

7. Avoid Smoking At All Costs

Smoking can cause wrinkles and premature aging by reducing the amount of oxygen and nutrients that reach the skin. Additionally, smoking can cause a dull, uneven complexion, and can lead to discoloration of the skin, such as yellowing or dark circles under the eyes.

Smoking can also cause a loss of collagen and elastin, which are essential for maintaining skin elasticity and firmness. Smoking can also suppress the immune system, which can make the skin more susceptible to acne, eczema, and other skin conditions.

Smoking can have a significant negative impact on the appearance and health of a person’s skin, and quitting smoking is an important step in maintaining healthy, youthful skin.

Here’s steps to help:

  • Find an alternative method to manage stress or anxiety, such as exercise, meditation or talking to a therapist.

  • Surround yourself with supportive people who do not smoke and seek out environments where smoking is not happening.

  • Seek professional help if you need it, such as Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) or counseling.
